What is it, exactly?
In strict terms, ISO 14001 is the international standard by which the specified requirements for an effective environmental management system (EMS) are measured. Ok, so… what’s an EMS? According to the International Organization of Standardization (ISO), an EMS is “part of the management system used to manage environmental aspects, fulfill compliance obligations, and address risks and opportunities.”
It all sounds very lofty. And it is. But it needn’t be daunting. ISO 14001, in layman’s terms, is a system used by businesses to shore up energy wastes and inefficiencies. It simply provides a framework that an organization can follow to get greener. It’s also a completely voluntary standard too, that organizations can certify to if they so elect.
Of course, virtually every company today strives to be more environmentally responsible and sustainable. It’s become a cost of entry, if you will. And businesses that make a concerted effort to comply with ISO 14001 certification will reap numerous rewards, in addition to being better stewards of the environment.
A Few Benefits of ISO 14001
Who wouldn’t want that? Reducing waste will also limit consumption and lower
operating costs in areas you might not have considered.
Attracts More Business
Going green looks good to partners, vendors, and customers. It could even help win contracts from competitors.
Auditing your company’s processes and procedures invariably leads to increased efficiencies across the board.
Everything is scrutinized and optimized to promote worker safety and morale. This will strengthen the bond between workers and management.
Any time a company seeks to improve processes new unexpected innovations often arise. It leads to a company-wide, forward-thinking with customers and clients.
Reduces Carbon Footprint
If you don’t know what your carbon footprint is then it’s probably larger than it should be. ISO 14001 puts practices into place that conserve resources and energy usage.
Let us emphasize…ISO 14001 will reduce costs, increase efficiencies, eliminate unnecessary waste, streamline processes…all of which radically lowers costs.
